Ajamu X

Ajamu X (HON FRPS) is a darkroom and fine art photographic artist whose practice is rooted in sensuality — both in terms of embodied acts of making and sensuality in relation subject matter. He works mainly with traditional 19th Century printing process and techniques in particular the Platinum print.

His theoretical provocations and aesthetics privileges the tactile, material elements of the photographic “act”, and print by refusing the flattening of black queer studio and darkroom practices to staid notions of identity - thinking and representation.

His work has been exhibited in prestigious museums, galleries and alternative spaces worldwide. In 2022, he was canonised by The Trans Pennine Travelling Sisters as the Patron Saint of Darkrooms and received an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal Photographic Society.

His work is held in numerous private and public collections, including the Rose Art Museum, GOMA, Autograph, Tate Britain, the Arts Council of England, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Martin Parr Foundation, the Walker Art Gallery.

In 2025, Tate published a monograph on his practice as part of its Tate Photography Series.
